Unofficial Hiking Society: Fair Pay – Fair Play: Implementing Fair Structures in the Visual Arts
Unofficial Hiking Society AG develops artistic projects that explore the relationship between culture, society and institutional structures. The collective brings existing structures to light and explores new forms of collaboration.
«Fair Pay – Fair Play» is developing practical tools, in collaboration with Visarte Region Basel, to help implement fair working conditions in the visual arts. Its point of departure is the existing fee guidelines, which, in practice, are often only applied partially.
The project examines which conditions foster fair collaboration and how institutions and cultural practitioners can tackle structural challenges together rather than individually. As well as fees, «Fair Pay – Fair Play» takes into account factors such as transparency, employee participation, care work and long-term collaboration.
In partnership with artists, curators and institutions, the collective develops practical tools, a digital platform and a «Fairness Index» to make fair collaboration visible and transparent. In addition, they are working on a recognition platform to publicly highlight institutions with exemplary practices and foster exchange within the art world.
The aim is to establish fair working conditions as an integral part of cultural work in the long term.

«Fair Pay – Fair Play» promotes fair practices through practical tools rather than new guidelines. Through the ‘Fairness Index’, a digital platform, and a recognition model, the project provides guidance, transparency and positive incentives for fair collaboration. Besides to financial remuneration, it also takes into account working conditions, transparency and employee participation. The tools developed will remain usable beyond the duration of the project and will help to strengthen sustainable structures within the arts sector.
